Core Energy’s Expertise in Spent Fuel Storage at Kudamkulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP-3&4)
Project Overview
Core Energy was awarded the prestigious contract for the Away from Reactor Spent Fuel Storage Facility (SFSF) at Kudamkulam Nuclear Power Project (Units 3 & 4), located in Tamil Nadu. This highly complex project demonstrates our capability to deliver world-class nuclear infrastructure through globally competitive EPC execution.
Critical Systems and Solutions
The SFSF is designed for handling and storage of spent fuel from Light Water Reactors (LWR), requiring precision engineering, advanced technology, and strict safety protocols.
- Pool Water Cooling & Purification System: Maintains safe temperatures and water purity.
- Compressor, Dryer & Receiver Systems: Ensures optimal operational conditions.
- Blast Resistant Doors: Engineered to withstand extreme scenarios.
- Cask Pit Isolation Gates: Enables secure containment of fuel casks.
- Cask Handling EOT Crane (150T/20T): Single failure-proof heavy-duty crane system.
- HVAC Systems: Maintains controlled environmental conditions.
- Fire Barrier & Radiation Monitoring Systems (RMS): Ensures operational safety.
- Physical Protection Systems (PPS): Includes access control, intrusion detection, and CCTV surveillance.
Challenges in Spent Fuel Handling
- Neutron Poison Contaminants: Presence of U-232 and U-236 increases radiological complexity, requiring advanced shielding solutions.
- Special Handling Requirements: Implementation of specialized machinery and strict protocols for safe fuel management.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety
All systems are designed in accordance with international nuclear safety standards, ensuring minimal radiation exposure to personnel and the public as per ICRP guidelines:
- Occupational Exposure Limit: 20 mSv/year (averaged over 5 years)
- Public Exposure Limit: 1 mSv/year (excluding natural & medical exposure)
Commitment to Excellence
Core Energy continues to demonstrate excellence in nuclear engineering by delivering safe, innovative, and high-performance infrastructure. This project reinforces our leadership in complex nuclear EPC solutions and our contribution to India’s long-term nuclear energy sustainability.
